Rolex invented the Oyster case in 1926 and has equipped nearly every watch it has made since then with the trailblazing component. Fast-forward 100 years to 2026, and the brand is celebrating the Rolex Oyster centennial. The milestone isn’t just monumental for Rolex either, but also for the countless collectors worldwide who own an Oyster-cased watch.

Why? Significant milestones almost always draw attention in collector circles, especially for desirable or discontinued models. At the same time, it is important to note that an anniversary doesn’t always guarantee a sharp rise in value, either. In this guide, we will explore exactly what the anniversary means for value, why the Oyster case matters, and what Rolex released in 2026 to mark the occasion.

What Owners of Oyster Case Rolex Watches Should Know

  • 2026 marked 100 years of the Rolex Oyster case. With such an important milestone comes potentially heightened demand for the brand and other watches in the lead-up to the anniversary.
  • Collectors can borrow against watches to access liquidity without having to sell. That includes models like the recently discontinued Rolex Pepsi GMT and even the 100th anniversary Oyster Perpetual.
  • The original box, papers, sales receipt, and any records of service history are considered part of the “documentation.” Having them can strengthen resale and appraisal values.
  • The value of vintage and pre-owned Rolex watches depends more on factors like condition, originality, and demand, not just the watch’s age or anniversaries.

History of Rolex Oyster: Why Every Modern Rolex Owes Something to 1926

When Rolex developed the Oyster Case, it was the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch case. It protected the movement via a screw-down crown. Today, most Oyster cases have a standard, 100-meter depth rating for everyday wear. However, the Oyster cases on some professional dive models are engineered to travel as far as 300 meters or even 3,900 meters below the ocean’s surface.

Rolex developed the self-winding “Perpetual” mechanical movement a few years after the Oyster case in 1931. These two components have since become the foundation of the vast majority of Rolex’s portfolio, which is why most watches the brand makes today bear the “Oyster Perpetual” distinction on the dial, even if they come from collections outside the Oyster Perpetual series. So, the category “Rolex Oyster” in the context of the 2026 releases doesn’t just refer to the time-only Oyster Perpetual dress watch, but also any Rolex dress watch or sports watch that uses each of those components. That can include collections such as the Submariner, GMT Master II, Explorer, Datejust, and many more.

The 2026 Rolex Oyster Perpetual: What Rolex Released for the Centennial

There was a lot of speculation surrounding the Rolex Oyster centennial. How was Rolex going to commemorate such an important milestone? There were many exciting new releases throughout the brand’s portfolio, but a few of the most notable were within the 2026 Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection itself.

One of the most talked-about releases was the Rainbow Jubilee dial.  It carries forward the tradition of the older-style Jubilee dials with the repeating “Rolex” pattern. Those dials were monochrome and often in classic colors like silver, black, or champagne. The new 2026 dials feature several different colors on a single dial. It didn’t take long for avid collectors to compare the new dial to the Celebration Oyster Perpetual released in 2023. That dial rose in value in the pre-owned market as its unique execution became harder to find at retail. It will be hard to say if the new Jubilee dial will follow suit, though. Only time will tell.

The Oyster Perpetual also returned to precious metal after years of being available only in stainless steel. Core options include yellow gold or Everose and either a 28mm or 34mm case. By reintroducing gold to the lineup, Rolex has elevated the collection from solid entry-level status to one with more substance in terms of overall value.

The most notable release, however, was the special Rolex 100-year anniversary Oyster Perpetual. The watch is mostly furnished in Oystersteel, with a yellow-gold crown, hour markers, and bezel, and comes in three sizes: 31mm, 36mm, and 41mm. Also, for the first time, the Oyster Perpetual features a slate dial. It is decorated with a special green pad-printed Rolex logo, green square markers above the Chromalight batons, and the designation “100 YEARS” below 6 o’clock. The watch is a standard production model. However, its unique dial and status as an anniversary Rolex could boost its collectability.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Value: What the Centennial Actually Means

With that said, it is perfectly natural to wonder what will happen to Rolex Oyster Perpetual value in 2026. The anniversary certainly earned Rolex and its Oyster watches some attention. However, milestones alone aren’t enough to determine value for every Rolex watch. Factors like demand, availability, and condition are much more important.

Another angle to consider is how discontinuing a desirable Oyster watch in 2026 can move the secondary market.  A great example is the recently discontinued Rolex GMT Master II Pepsi.  The first ceramic Pepsi GMT came to market in 2014, first in white gold and then later in stainless steel in 2018. The bezel saw high demand throughout its production run. As many suspected, the value rose significantly within weeks of its discontinuation in 2026, especially for watches in unworn condition.

What Rolex Collectors and Reference-Hunters Watch For

For many serious collectors, finding the most valuable watch goes beyond just the model’s name.  It is also about reference-level details such as dial variations and other design elements unique to the watch. For example, the new 2026 Oyster Centennial is essentially a standard Oyster Perpetual with special anniversary-related details, such as the green squares above the hour markers and the “100 YEARS” inscription at the bottom of the dial. To novice buyers, it might just seem like a two-tone version of the OP. Collectors familiar with the brand can easily recognize its desirability.

Two watches from the same collection can have different collector appeal. It comes down to the individual reference number, unique design elements, and even whether the watch is still in production. A great example is the discontinued Rolex Pepsi vs. current production models like the black-and-grey-bezelled Rolex Bruce Wayne. While the Bruce Wayne is very desirable in its own right, it doesn’t always command quite the same premium on the pre-owned market as its Pepsi equivalent.

Knowing the difference is also a vital part of authenticating a Rolex where even the smallest details can make the biggest difference in value.

Borrowing Against a Rolex: Liquidity Without Selling

When shopping for a watch, collectors often consider condition, demand, and service history. Those factors also matter in lending, especially when the owner needs to cash in on their watch for the best price without selling.

What the Rolex Oyster Centennial Means for Owners

100 years have come and gone, and the Oyster case is still at the heart of the Rolex portfolio. The anniversary doesn’t necessarily mean a rise in value for any Rolex in particular, but it certainly gives owners a reason to celebrate their collection and to understand better what makes it valuable. Condition, originality, rarity, demand, and even reference-level design elements are all important factors to consider, not just age or milestones.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Rolex Oyster Centennial

What is the Rolex Oyster Centennial, and why does 2026 matter?

The Rolex Oyster Centennial is the 100th anniversary of the Rolex Oyster case. The brand celebrated in 2026 with several new Oyster Perpetual watches.

Does the centennial make my Oyster Perpetual worth more?

Not necessarily. Value ultimately depends on factors like demand, reference, and condition.  The anniversary itself does not guarantee higher value for the Oyster Perpetual.

Why do discontinued Rolex references often rise in value?

Some discontinued Rolex watches can rise in value when limited secondary-market supply meets strong demand. The GMT-Master II Pepsi is a prime example. Collectors consistently sought the model throughout its production run, and its discontinuation has pushed values even higher.

What is the difference between the Oyster case and the Oyster Perpetual?

The Oyster case is a component, and the Oyster Perpetual is a collection.  As its name suggests, the Oyster Perpetual uses both the waterproof Oyster case and the self-winding Perpetual movement.

Are the 2026 centennial Oyster Perpetual models a good buy at retail?

Oyster Perpetuals with special dials, like the 2020 Celebration Rolex, have been harder to buy at retail in the past. The Centennial OP might not necessarily follow suit, but it has happened before.
